SANCHEZ RUIZ

Judith Sánchez Ruz began her dance studies at the age of eleven at the National School of Arts in Ciudad de la Habana, Cuba. The Berlin-based choreographer, performer and teacher worked in New York City from 1999 to 2011, before relocating to Berlin. She has performed the works by notable choreographers Sasha Waltz & Guest, (2011-2014); Deborah Hay, (2012); Trisha Brown Dance Company, (2006-2009); Jeremy Nelson & Luis Malvacias (2001-2002); DD Dorvillier, (2002, 2019); David Zambrano, (1997), Mal Pelo Company, (1997-1999); and DanzAbierta Company, (1991-1996), among others. She is the founder of her company JSR Company and works internationally and in Berlin as a choreographer, performer, and teacher.

In 2009 Ms. Sanchez was selected as a participant in the cultural exchange program between the United States and Cuba by the Cuban Artists Fund (CAF). She was awarded “Mujeres Destacadas (Outstanding Women) 2008” by the Spanish newspaper in New York, “El DIARIO” and selected by Dance Magazine as one of the 25 Dancers to Watch in 2010 in the United States.

Most recently she has been working as a Professor at  HZT – Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz and a Visiting Professorship / Weißensee Kunsthochschule, Master Arts Programme “Spatial Strategies, among many others institutions in Europe, Asia and the US. Currently, she is  focusing on writing a book about Improvisation and Performance Practices, with this research she gathers drawings, processes, possible scores, and methodologies. In 2017 she was awarded a residency at Choreographisches Centrum Heidelberg in Projekt der TANZAllianz,, Heidelberg, Germany. In 2020 she was awarded the Dis-TANZ Solo grant from Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.
